16U AAA Baseball Ontario Provincials – Day 2 Results and Sunday Outlook

Day 2 is in the books at the 2019 Baseball Ontario 16U Provincial Championship and just four teams remain heading into Sunday. Play will continue with two games at 9am:

Game 20 9:00am Bernie Arbour
Mississauga North (0 L) North Toronto (1 L)
Barrie (1 L) Etobicoke (1 L)
Game 21 9:00am Mohawk 2

Following the conclusion of play in the 9am games, one of two scenarios will remain:

Should Mississauga North be victorious against North Toronto, they would face the winner of the Barrie/Etobicoke contest at noon, at Bernie Arbour Stadium. A victory by Mississauga would clinch the title, while they would have to be defeated twice (due to their undefeated standing) in order to have the pennant cluched from their grasp.

Should North Toronto defeat Mississauga in the morning game, three teams would remain, all with one loss. A draw for a bye would occur among the remaining three teams, with the team winning the draw advancing directly to a single-elimination game for the provincial championship at 3pm at Bernie Arbour, while the other two teams would face off at noon. However, should Etobicoke defeat Barrie in their game, by virtue of the Rangers’ Round 3 bye on Saturday, they would be ineligble to participate in the draw.

In any case, Sunday is shaping up to be a fantastic day of amateur baseball in the Steel City!

July Rules Review

As part of the HBUA’s continuous efforts to encourage umpires to study the Official Baseball Rules and Umpire Manual year-round, we will be conducting Rules Reviews periodically throughout the this season and for future seasons.

We encourage each umpire to share their thoughts and ideas regarding rules enforcement as there may be more than one right answer in some cases. You will be given 15 days (July 15th) to submit your answers within the provided online form.

Some Rules Review questions will consist of rules interpretations that have occurred during the current and past seasons. These questions can serve as a resource for daily pre-game rules discussion with your crew. We encourage crews to submit difficult and rare rule interpretations to Chris Marco (cmarco_5@hotmail.com) so we may include for upcoming Rule Reviews.

Remember good umpiring means having a complete knowledge of, and proficiency in, all Official Baseball Rules, interpretations, policies and regulations. Please take the time to read some portion of the rule book each day.

July Rules Review

Correcting Incorrect Rule Applications

All,

Games are to be officiated by a crew of umpires, not individuals. Umpires should officiate and communicate as a team and should assist and support one another on the field at all times. This includes rule interpretations.

This memo is a reminder to inform all of you it is the CREW’s responsibility to ensure are rules are properly enforced. In the event a rule is misapplied, it is viewed as a failure by the entire crew, not just one particular umpire.

In the event that one member of the crew misapplies a rule, it is our expectation that the other umpire(s) on the field attempt to initiate a crew consultation to discuss the ruling to ensure the correct decision is made, regardless of whether or not the calling umpire is questioned by either team.

If there is uncertainty regarding a rule application, we strongly encourage one of the umpires on the field to leave the field and check the Official Rules and / or Umpire Manual. The Official Rules can be accessed and downloaded in PDF form under “Quick Links” on the side menu. The Minor League Baseball Umpire Manual can be purchased here.

From the HBUA Policy and Procedure Manual:

In the event of a game that must be replayed due to an overturned protest, the Assigner shall schedule the original umpire crew for the game. If the protest was overturned due to an incorrect rule application, the umpires shall not be paid for the replayed game. In the event the original crew is unavailable, the original umpire(s) shall forfeit the game fee to the replacement umpire(s)

Remember good umpiring means having a complete knowledge of, and proficiency in, all Official Baseball Rules, interpretations, policies and regulations. Please take the time to read some portion of the rule book each day.
