The President’s Desk

Welcome to our website!!

The Hamilton Baseball Umpire Association is the oldest umpire association in Canada! Our records date all the way back to 1906. Since then, many great umpires have come through the umpiring ranks here in Hamilton. Hamilton has been noted to have some of the best umpires in the province!

The HBUA has been proud to be part of several special events over the years, including the Steel City Midget Tournament, CANUSA Games, International Children’s Games and the Canadian National Old Timers Championships just to name a few. This doesn’t include the many tournaments run by local associations throughout Hamilton each and every year. This year the HBUA will be involved in the 2017 National Old Timer Championships with close to 40 teams from across Canada involved. This will be the 3rd time that Hamilton has hosted the event!

HBUA members umpire “rep” baseball from Rookie Ball to Junior, in addition to High School, Old Timers, and the Golden Horseshoe Baseball League. Several members of our association are on staff with the Intercounty Baseball League, and three of our members currently umpire professionally for MiLB, Chris Marco, Dave Attridge and Steve Jaschinski.

In 2017 is also the 12th Anniversary of the HBUA hosting the Baseball Ontario Minor Midget AAA Championship. Every Labour Day weekend, the best U16 players in the province compete for the provincial championship. We have a great reputation of hosting this tournament every Labour Day weekend. Who would have thought that umpires can run a tournament?

With the 2017 season fast approaching we have seen a number of exciting changes within the HBUA over the winter:

Baseball Ontario has been set a Level 1/2 clinic for Saturday April 22th at Bishop Tonnos SS. If you are interested in joining the HBUA, feel free to approach one of our members, who will be assisting the Baseball Ontario instructors at the clinic. You must be a carded umpire in order to work for our association. Clinic details can be found here on the website.

Speaking of the website, lots of work has gone into upgrading our website over this past off season. Lots of training information has been added as well as many new features. Special thanks to Chris Marco and Chris Walters for their time and effort into making this happen. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter as well!

The HBUA takes great pride in umpire development, anchored by a very strong mentor program. Our association assists local house leagues with beginner-level clinics in addition to first-hand observation during house league games. Umpires interested in making the jump to more competitive levels are paired with senior officials to ease the transition into faster, better baseball. The HBUA mentor program has been very successful over the years and has produced some very good up and coming umpires. Without these mentors the HBUA wouldn’t be where they are today!

As you can see lots is happening with more exciting things to come for the 2017 season!

Looking forward to seeing you during the year!
